Weapons, Firearms & Powers

Valor Mortis has a small, deliberate arsenal. The publisher's own framing is that matching the right weapon to the right enemy is what the combat rewards, which only works if the tools are genuinely different. Here is every confirmed one.

Read this before the arms race

Hands-on coverage of a long play session found only two swords, one pistol, one blunderbuss and a small number of Transmutations, and judged the weapon pool extremely narrow by soulslike standards. Valor Mortis is closer to a fixed-kit game like Sekiro than to a loot game. That is a design choice, not a gap in this page.

Melee weapons

The relative bars are our read of the official and hands-on descriptions, not extracted game data. Reach measures how much space the weapon lets you keep; speed is recovery, not attack animation; impact is how much a hit does to a guard; parry is how forgiving the parry frames felt to reviewers.

  • Saber

    Confirmed

One-handed curved sword · Demo starting kit

The default military blade and the most forgiving thing in the game. Middling speed, middling reach, parry-friendly frames.

    Reach
    Speed
    Impact
    Parry

Best against: Risen Soldier, Risen Musketeer, anything you are still learning.

If you are losing to a boss and cannot say why, put the saber back on. It is the weapon the combat is balanced around.

  • Rapier

    Confirmed

One-handed thrusting sword · Demo kit

Fast, precise, short, and it cannot block. The publisher states that its only form of defence is a perfectly timed parry. In exchange it can break enemy weak points without spending a single round of firearm ammunition.

    Reach
    Speed
    Impact
    Parry

Best against: Smallsword, Eternal Guardsman, the Justicar Aurelius duel.

This is a genuine trade rather than a sidegrade, and the publisher described it in their own words: no block, perfect parries or nothing, ranged weak-point access instead. It is the strongest argument that Valor Mortis is a fixed-kit game in the Sekiro mould, because the weapon choice changes your defensive options rather than your damage number.

  • Claymore

    Confirmed

Two-handed great sword · To be confirmed in the full game

The official gameplay overview names it directly: slow, and enormously high impact. This is the weapon for targets that do not dodge.

    Reach
    Speed
    Impact
    Parry

Best against: Clumped crowds, Volunteer Brute, Experiment 83.

It is also the weapon behind the Hood-Snatcher trophy, which asks for three decapitations in a single attack. That tells you the sweep is genuinely wide.

Firearms

Firearms occupy your second hand, which means choosing one costs you a two-handed melee weapon. That is the real decision: the Musket and the Claymore compete for the same slot.

  • Pistol

    Confirmed

    One-handed sidearm · Default sidearm

The baseline the publisher used to describe everything else. Always available, never spectacular, and the safest way to chip a boss you cannot yet read.

    Range
    Power
    Speed
    Utility

Best against: Interrupting slow wind-ups, weak-point pings, mid-air kills.

Two trophies are built around it: Windhover (three mid-air pistol kills) and Single Stroke (shooting a Risen Grenadier's bucket off). Do not treat it as a throwaway.

  • Musket

    Confirmed

Two-handed long arm · Full game

Officially stated to beat the pistol on both range and power. The cost is that it lives in your second hand, which you also use for heavy melee.

    Range
    Power
    Speed
    Utility

Best against: Pulling enemies apart at range, hitting a weak point on a slow boss, anything with armour.

It competes directly with the Claymore for the same hand. Pick per encounter, not per run.

  • Blunderbuss

    Reported

    Two-handed scattergun · Full game

A cone, not a bullet. Its trophy, Scattershot, asks for five kills with one shot, which is a direct statement about the spread.

    Range
    Power
    Speed
    Utility

Best against: Packed Shambling Villagers, Howler packs, anything you have deliberately herded into a doorway.

Worthless at range and slow to recover. Treat it as a crowd answer, not a boss answer.

The loadout wheel, and how few answers you actually carry

Every weapon question in this game resolves to the same constraint: a nine-slot wheel that the demo only partly filled. You are not choosing between two hundred swords, you are choosing which six answers to bring.

The loadout wheelRadial diagram of a nine-slot loadout wheel. Six slots were filled in the demo, grouped as two melee, two firearms and two Transmutations. Three slots are unconfirmed. The centre of the wheel is the loadout itself.Loadout6 of 9 in the demoSaberMeleeRapierMeleeMusketFirearmPistolFirearmFireTransmutationShieldTransmutation???

The loadout wheel

Valor Mortis is a fixed-kit game, and the wheel is why. You are not choosing between hundreds of swords; you are choosing which six of nine answers to carry, and switching mid-fight costs you a held button and a moment of not defending. That single constraint explains the small arsenal, the deliberate weapon trade-offs, and why the game ships a Quick Cast setting that removes the confirmation step.

  • Melee — Saber, Rapier
  • Firearm — Musket, Pistol
  • Transmutation — Fire, Shield
  • Unconfirmed — 3 of 9 slots, unknown contents

Why it is built this way

This is the mechanical explanation for the loadout system being fixed rather than random: you are choosing which six of nine answers to carry, not which of two hundred swords to equip. It also explains why the demo showed two firearms in one left hand, which is not how most games with a firearm slot work.

The cost, stated plainly

A wheel you hold open mid-fight is a real cost, and it is the most consistently reported friction in the demo. It is also why the game ships a Quick Cast setting that removes the confirmation step from Transmutations.

The wheel is six confirmed slots out of nine. The other three are unconfirmed, so they are drawn as unknown rather than filled in with a guess.

Consumables that apply fire

Video breakdown, 16 June 2026. These items appear in no written source, and they were only observed in the demo, so treat the list as incomplete rather than as the full item set.

Oil grenade

ReportedThrowable

Creates an area of burning ground that damages over time.

Area denial and crowd clearing, and a second way to apply fire damage without spending the Fire Transmutation. It is the answer to the Carrion problem when your Transmutation gauge is empty.

Fire whetstone

ReportedApplied consumable

Adds fire damage to melee weapons for a period.

Converts a blade build into a fire build without switching weapons, which matters because Carrion and similar plague masses ignore cutting damage outright. Worth checking whether the buff stacks with the Fire Transmutation.

Both of them do the same important job

Both of these apply fire, and fire is the confirmed answer to the one enemy family that hard-counters your sword. That makes them the most practically useful consumables in the list rather than flavour items.

Transmutations: your left hand

Transmutations are not spells you save for emergencies. They run on Nephtoglobin, which you rebuild by landing melee hits, so the intended rhythm is hit, spend, hit. Each one answers a different problem.

  • Fire

    ConfirmedDamage over time

The name says flamethrower and the effects say purge. Burns on contact, keeps burning after you stop, and ignores the blade immunity that stops you cold against Carrion.

Why it matters: It is the answer to the one enemy family that hard-counters your sword. Demo impressions also report that Fire reveals hidden passages, so it is a traversal tool wearing a weapon's coat.

    Best against
Carrion, Shambling Villager crowds, Howler packs
    Synergy
Pairs with anything that holds enemies still. Stasis then Fire is the cleanest way to clear a room you do not want to melee.
    Trophies
Flaming Feast — four enemies burning from one use · Fight Fire With Fire — ignite something while you are burning
  • Shield

    ConfirmedAbsorb and retaliate

The publisher describes it as absorbing damage and then releasing a shockwave. It is the defensive Transmutation, and the only one that behaves like a resource you deliberately spend by getting hit.

Why it matters: It converts incoming punishment into outgoing punishment, which is the exact inverse of how your Endurance-based block works. Two defensive layers with opposite economies is a real tactical choice.

    Best against
Ranged suppression, Arena set-pieces, Anything you have to walk into
    Synergy
Shield Bash is confirmed by trophy wording as a push strong enough to send an enemy into an abyss. Look for ledges before you look for the health bar.
    Trophies
Abyssal Eviction — push an enemy into the abyss with Shield Bash
  • Grapple

    ConfirmedTraversal

Point-to-point movement. The official overview trailer frames it as environment traversal, alongside wall running and latching onto ledges.

Why it matters: Valor Mortis has no in-game map, per hands-on coverage, and its regions are interconnected and vertical. Grapple is how you stop being lost and start being able to leave.

    Best against
Vertical arenas, Closing distance on ranged enemies, Getting out of a fight you cannot win
    Synergy
Mid-air aiming stays live during a swing, which is the intended route to the Windhover trophy. Grapple, aim, pistol, land.
    Trophies
Windhover — three pistol kills while aiming in mid-air
  • Stasis

    ReportedCrowd control

A time-slowing or lock-down effect. The trophy list confirms it by name through Statue of Insanity, which requires fully locking a named elite in Stasis.

Why it matters: Crowd control is the difference between the Howler pack and three individual Howlers. It is also the cleanest way to create a damage window on a boss whose combos you have not learned.

    Best against
Howler packs, Risen Sapeur, General Lothaire's summons
    Synergy
Stasis to freeze, Fire to cook, then reposition. Three Transmutations in sequence will clear most rooms that would otherwise kill you.
    Trophies
Statue of Insanity — fully lock Sergeant Gaspard 'Cannonhand' Dubois in Stasis

Upgrade milestones

The trophy list confirms three separate max-upgrade milestones: one melee weapon, one firearm and one Transmutation. Materials are finite enough that the intended route is to commit rather than spread.

  • Bladesmith

Upgrade a single Melee Weapon to maximum.

  • Gun of Glory

Upgrade a single Firearm to maximum.

  • Transmutation Artifex

Upgrade a single Transmutation to maximum.
