General Lothaire Boss Guide
ConfirmedGeneral Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer
The demo's first wall. In the retail game he is a Chapter II boss, and that single change is the fix.
Chapter II
Torn Banner
Kill General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer.
Lothaire is the single most-discussed encounter in pre-release coverage, and the reason is a scheduling problem rather than a design one. In the retail game he is the boss at the end of Chapter II. In the demo he stood at the end of the demo's bespoke Chapter I, where players had roughly thirty minutes of practice behind them, and the studio has said publicly that this short runway is why he read as unfair. He fights with a polearm and a longsword at once, which gives him reach that punishes players who back up and hope to reset. He is slow. He is not forgiving.

Watch it, then read the loop
Two players recorded their attempts, and between them they document the parts of this fight that no written source covers: where your resources come from mid-fight, and what actually fills his stagger bar.

Threats and how to answer them
Double-reach pressure
ReportedTell: He swaps between polearm sweeps and longsword cuts without stepping in. His reach is longer than it looks and catches players who think they are safe.
Answer: Stop trying to out-space him. Break the sequence at the source with a parry, then take the critical.
He carries a firearm
ReportedTell: He shoots rather than swinging.
Answer: Dodge laterally. Two independent player accounts name this specifically, and a lateral dodge is the answer rather than a block.
Your fire resource runs out mid-fight
ReportedTell: The gauge that pays for the fire Transmutation is empty and he is still standing.
Answer: Shoot a blister. Destroying one drops a pickup that refills the gauge, so the fight has its own ammo economy and aimed shots are how you feed it. Melee alone does not sustain it.
Phase two resets his blisters
ReportedTell: He enters the second stage and the blisters you already broke are back.
Answer: Plan for the reset rather than being surprised by it. Because the blisters return, so does the rate multiplier on his stagger bar, which means the second stage is not simply a harder version of the first.
Summoned support
ReportedTell: Something else joins the arena while he is still upright.
Answer: Clear the adds first. Reports agree they go down in one hit, so this is a few seconds of work rather than a second fight.
The approach
Before you walk in
- Turn Target Lock on. The demo defaults are worth changing before this fight, not during it.
- Set Instant Restart so a death costs you a second, not a menu.
- A player who levelled specifically for this fight put maximum stamina first, then cheaper blocking that also grants more recoverable health, then critical damage, then reduced melee stamina cost, then maximum health. That ordering is worth copying because the fight is long before it is fast.
- Carry a firearm with ammunition. This is the one fight where your gun is a resource generator rather than a damage source.
The loop that wins
- Hold mid-range so you can see the wind-up but are not cornered.
- Parry the first hit of a string rather than the last. Stagger damage is what actually ends this fight.
- Take the critical into his knees and his neck, then disengage instead of chasing a second swing.
- Shoot a blister, collect the pickup, and keep the fire gauge full. Two independent accounts describe this as the loop that makes the fight work rather than an optional extra.
- In stage two, go for the blister on his back. He speeds up and starts using his other hand, so the fight shifts from a blocking problem to an evasion problem.
What loses the fight
- Do not trade hits. Every hands-on source says the same thing: attrition loses here.
- Do not stand still once adds are alive. You will be hit from behind the camera.
- Do not try to dodge one specific attack. A player who beat him repeatedly says it is only reliably avoided by backing fully out of range, which is the opposite of the dodge answer you use everywhere else.
- Do not assume parrying is the only thing that fills his stagger bar. At least one levelled player reports that holding a block advances it too, which is unusual for this game and worth testing on your own attempt.
Weaknesses and loadout
What it is weak to
- Blisters: he carries blister clusters on his body, and they are the whole fight rather than decoration. Destroying them makes his stagger bar fill faster and it spawns the pickups that pay for your fire Transmutation.
- The stagger bar under his health: this fight is won on that bar, not on his health pool. Filling it is what produces the openings.
- His neck, once he is on his knees: the critical after a parry is the highest-damage window in the encounter.
- Add clear: the summons die to a single hit, so clearing them is cheap rather than a real fight.
- Stasis: the demo hands you crowd-control for a reason on this encounter.
Suggested loadout
- Melee
- Saber or rapier from the demo kit; reach matters less than parry timing
- Firearm
- Pistol, but bring ammo. It exists to break blisters and refill your fire gauge, not to chip his health
- Transmutation
- Fire, because the blisters feed it and he is one of the few demo targets where burning does real work · Stasis to buy space when the arena fills up
- Amber
- One that returns health on striking an enemy. A player who beat him names this as doing real work in the fight. · Dilated Moment, which slows time while you are aiming the firearm and is what makes hitting a blister realistic during the faster second stage.
Rewards
- Torn Banner trophy / achievement
- Chapter I clear, demo progress ends here
Enemies in this encounter
Risen Soldier
ConfirmedBlock the basic cuts and answer the recovery. This is the enemy the parry system was tuned against, and the cleanest place to farm the 10-parries-without-getting-hit trophy.
Volunteer Brute
ConfirmedRoll under the sweep rather than away from it. Then take the gap before it resets.
